Need a Creative Solution For a Challenging Situation?
We Think Outside The Box

Because we’re a boutique insurance agency, our talented team knows how to develop creative solutions that many other agencies just won’t touch. Here are a few examples of how we’ve helped our clients over the years:

Case Studies

THE LIMIT DEEMED TOO LARGE

An existing Johnsonese client landed a major contract with a state commission. The state required a very large insurance limit from our client. No single insurance company would risk the required amount on our relatively small client. We worked with a wholesale broker to put together a consortium of four insurance companies, each offering smaller limits, to reach the total required by the state. Our client secured their contract.

THE HOMEOWNER WHO COULDN’T FIND COVERAGE AFTER A BIG CLAIM

A homeowner’s insurance was cancelled after they had a five-figure claim. Other agents that they approached were unable to find replacement coverage for them. The homeowner’s mortgage company then stepped in and provided insurance, but at a punitive rate. The homeowner approached Johnsonese, and we went to a specialty insurance source called the “excess & surplus” (E&S) market. Some agents avoid this market—there is more paperwork required and agent commissions can be lower. We obtained an E&S policy for our client at substantial cost savings.

THE STARTUP THAT NEEDED BIG COVERAGE… AND SAVED $20,000

A startup consulting firm landed a large business as a client. The contract required substantial insurance coverages from the startup. We provided the startup with data and coaching to negotiate lower requirements. The startup saved $20,000 based on the reduced insurance requirements.

THE HEIRS THAT COULDN’T GET COVERAGE ON INHERITED PROPERTY

An extended family inherited their matriarch’s home. When they attempted to list the home for sale, they discovered that Homeowners insurance on the property had lapsed. Realtors typically will not list uninsured properties. The family had difficulty getting replacement Homeowner’s insurance because the property had been vacant for some time and was in disrepair. We obtained a Vacant Building policy for our client that allowed them to list and sell the property.

THE BUSINESS OWNER WHO WAS INELIGIBLE FOR PERSONAL LTD

An existing business owner client wanted to purchase Long Term Disability for himself. We discovered that the client’s personal medical history made him ineligible for an individual disability policy. Thinking creatively, we recommended a Group Disability plan for his business. Group plans are not limited by an individual participant’s medical history. Our client received the coverage that he wanted, and as a bonus, his employees received a new benefit.

THE UNIQUE NONPROFIT THAT OTHER AGENTS DECLINED TO QUOTE

A startup nonprofit came to us looking for general insurance. The organization paired teenagers with design professionals to complete real projects in their neighborhoods. Insurance companies declined to quote for them as either a social service or educational organization because of the installation work with the design projects. This type of work is not typical for a nonprofit. Ultimately, we were able to obtain insurance for the organization as a construction contractor.

FAQ

HOW DO YOU PRONOUNCE JOHNSONESE?

Johnsonese is pronounced jän-sə-ˈnēz. The memory device that we find most helpful is that it rhymes with Japanese.

WHAT DOES JOHNSONESE MEAN?

Johnsonese is the literary style of Dr. Samuel Johnson. He was a literary critic in 18th-century England known for reviewing the works and Shakespeare and writing an early English dictionary. His writing has been described with words such as ‘bombastic’, ‘pompous’, and ‘inflated’.

WHY DID YOU NAME YOUR INSURANCE AGENCY ‘JOHNSONESE’?

First, Johnsonese is a play on the last name of our founder, Chris Johnson. Second, in practical terms, the domain name was available. Third, we like the irony that we attempt to communicate in exactly the opposite manner than ‘Johnsonese’. Johnsonese describes language that is bombastic, pompous, or inflated. We work to be plain spoken and direct with our clients and partners.

You target Technology and Entertainment clients?!? What do they have in common?

What do they have in common? The common denominator among our clients is that Intellectual Property (IP) is their key asset. Traditional businesses are more focused on physical assets. Think of manufacturing (machinery), retail (inventory), or construction (tools and materials). Our clients generate and leverage IP in the form of software, music, art, and new business models. Our job is to help project our clients’ Intellectual Property. Insuring software code and a screenplay are very similar processes. So, from an insurance standpoint, there are a lot of similarities between Technology and Entertainment! And it’s why our tagline is “Insuring Ideas and Their Creators”!
